Silver City, NM -- Western New Mexico's Mustang basketball teams proved to be poor hosts Saturday as they sent visiting Regis University home without a win. The men's impressive 62-37 victory was their third straight, while the Lady Stangs thrilling 78-73 come-from-behind win knocked league leading Regis from the ranks of the conference undefeated.
The Western men improved to 7-6 (3-2) while the women notched their second win of the season and improved to 2-8 (2-3).
The Lady Stangs started off the night with a season-best shooting performance against the talented Rangers. After trailing by eight in at the intermission, Western clawed their way back to take the lead near the 10-minute mark momentarily. Regis retook the lead, but the pesky Mustangs hung around and rode some hot shooting from the three-point line to finally take the lead for good.
Tannesia Manley returned to form scoring 16 points, with 11 of those coming in the second half. Crystal Smith matched that 16-point tally, also having a good second half. Ashley Vigil scored 14 while Natalie Lara had 12.
Western shot a season best 59 percent from the field.
The men's team turned in their third straight impressive performance with their victory. The Rangers were never really in the game, scoring just 12 points in the first half to Western's 36. Regis did get closer midway through the second half, but the Mustangs closed the gate late with sharp shooting at game's end.
Casey Crevelone (Tucson, AZ/Canyon del Oro High School) scored 15 points and Trey Clarkson (Tucson, AZ/Sal Pointe High School) added 12.
Western out-rebounded Regis by just two pulls, but out-shot the Rangers 45 percent to 29 percent.
The Mustang teams hit the road for the next two weeks with a big road swing that will see them face four conference opponents. Colorado Christian and Metro State come next week, followed by Adams State and CSU-Pueblo the following week.
